Micro-macro: Why focus on levels of data collection and analysis? Introduction to the BMS Micro-macro section

How can we envision the articulation between these different levels if we choose more than one? These questions arise in all research, but sometimes in an almost unconscious or mechanical way. This introduction outlines a number of milestones that will enable to place these questions in their historical context, to specify what we are talking about when we refer to these micro-meso-macro levels, and to put forward some of the main issues at stake in the articulation between these levels.

Voluntary Associations of Migrants and Politics: The Case of North African Immigrants in France
Immigrants & Minorities, 2003

Associations are now said to develop tolerance, civic and democratic virtues, political sophistication and so on. Nevertheless, few studies focus on the interactions that actually take place in the associational context in order to demonstrate these relations. In this essay we focus on voluntary associations of migrants and we ask whether they are schools of democracy and places of politicization. We then study individual careers in order to identify the consequences of such a context for individuals. We work on three voluntary associations of young people mainly from North Africa, dealing with social action and leisure.

The micro-sociological aspects are here privileged, but one also tries to show how various types of reasons are articulated together and combined, with some similar to motivations of an identity order, while others are based on strategical calculations. It is shown in particular that when engaging in associations linked to immigration, one of the essential issues for the parties involved is to redefine their place and their status in society, in particular while coming in their turn to help others.

The interactionist model as well as ethnographic methods disclose processes of politicisation avoidance within the larger context of voluntary associations, which differs from the results of previous quantitative studies on the link between political participation and voluntary associations. Eventually, the author comes up with a wider definition of political involvement. Similarly, individual political participation rationales are revised and redefined in terms of political competence and interactionist levels of political participation.

Which Case Studies Are Relevant
Politix, 2012
Though ethnographic methods seem to have gained credit and legitimacy in recent decades in France... more Though ethnographic methods seem to have gained credit and legitimacy in recent decades in France, whether or not they can produce theoretical results that are relevant beyond the case studied is still up for debate. By retracing the various steps of fieldwork research conducted on voluntary associations of young migrants, this article makes two epistemological points. In keeping with Ragin’s case analysis, it demonstrates that producing a theory based on a case study is necessarily an iterative process, as the case only becomes clear when the research is over. More specifically, it focuses on borderline cases, and conceptualizes two forms of such cases, depending on how they are used to produce theory: negative cases are used to test the robustness and the degree of expansion of an existing theory; borderline cases are used to test an existing theory at its limits in order to refine it, specify its conditions of validity, and reconstruct it.
