Inthiscase,youmightrecordvocalsthroughInput1andguitarthroughInput2intoyourrecording application,whilemonitoringtheplaybackviaheadphonesorloudspeakers. Scarlett Solo’s inputs are on the front panel; Input 1 uses a standard 3-pin XLR socket, and is configuredtoworkwithmicrophonesofmosttypes;youwillfindamatingXLRmaleconnectoron theendofthemiccablesupplied.Input2usesa¼”(6.35mm)jacksocket(2-polewhenininstrument modeand3-polewhenusedasalineinput),andisintendedtoaccepthigherlevelsignalsfroma guitarorbass.

    Recording with a microphone TheScarlettCM25microphonesuppliedwithScarlettSoloStudioisastudioqualitycondensermic whichisidealforrecordingvocalsandmostacousticinstruments.ConnecttheCM25totheScarlett Solo’sInput1withthecablesupplied.Notethatthecablehasamaleandafemaleconnector;the femaleendconnectstothemicrophoneandthemaleendtotheScarlettSolo. Condensermicrophones(alsosometimesreferredtoas“capacitor”microphones)requireasource of DC power to operate. This is almost always supplied by “phantom” powering from the mic pre-amp to which the mic is connected (early and special-purpose condenser mics might have a separate power supply). For the CM25 (or any other condenser mic) to work with the Scarlett Solo, press the 48V button on the front panel (see front panel diagram on page 16, item [3]). DOuseamicstand.TheCM25hasanindustry-standard5/8”threadedinsertwhichallowsittobe mountedonmostmicstands.An3/8”adaptorisincludedtoallowittobefittedtomicstandsthat have this thread size. Inexpensive short, long and boom stands are readily available from music stores. DOobservethemicrophone’sorientation.TheCM25hasacardioidresponsepattern;thisbasically meansthatithasa“front”anda“back”,andifyoupointitthewrongwayround,itwillsoundawful. This mark (a cardioid response pattern) identifies the front of the microphone.

    Using Direct Monitoring Youwillfrequentlyheartheterm“latency”usedinconnectionwithdigitalaudiosystems.Inthecase ofthesimplerecordingapplicationdescribedabove,latencywillbethetimeittakesforyourinput signalstopassthroughyourrecordingdevice(yourMacorPC)andtheassociatedsoftware.Latency canbeaproblemforaperformerwhowishestorecordwhilemonitoringtheirinputsignals. ScarlettSoloisfittedwitha“DirectMonitoring”option,whichovercomesthisproblem.Settingthe frontpanelDIRECT MONITORswitchtoONwillrouteyourinputsignalsdirectlytoScarlettSolo’s headphoneandmainmonitoroutputs.Thisenablesyoutohearyourselfwithzerolatency–i.e.,in “realtime”–alongwiththecomputerplayback.Theinputsignalstoyourcomputerarenotaffected inanywaybythissetting. When“DirectMonitoring”issettoON,ensurethatCubaseLE(orotherDAW)isnotsettorouteits input(whatyouarecurrentlyrecording)toitsoutput.Ifitis,youwillhearyourselftwice,withone signalaudiblydelayedasanecho. Connecting Scarlett Solo to headphones TheScarlettSoloStudiopackageincludesapairofhighqualityheadphones,theScarlettHP60s. Theyarelightweightanddurable,andshouldprovecomfortabletowearforextendedperiods.The headbandisadjustable. TheHP60headphoneshavealownoise,oxygen-freecoppercable,fittedwitha¼”(6.35mm)3-pole (TRS)jackplug.ThisshouldbeconnectedtothesocketattherighthandsideoftheScarlettSolo’s frontpanel(indicatedbya symbol).TheScarlettSolo’sheadphoneoutputis,ofcourse,suitable forusewithothermodelsofheadphones. ThevolumeintheheadphonescanbeadjustedbytherotaryMONITORcontrol. Pleasebeawarethatheadphonesarecapableofgeneratingveryhighsoundpressurelevels attheear;prolongedexposuretohighsoundlevelsmayimpairyourhearing.Neverturn headphonesvolumeupanyfurtherthannecessary.

    Connecting Scarlett Solo to loudspeakers Thephono(RCA)outputsontherearpanelcanbeusedtoconnectmonitoringspeakers.Self-powered monitors (i.e., typical computer speakers) incorporate internal amplifiers, and may be connected directly.Larger,passiveloudspeakerswillrequireaseparatestereoamplifier;inthiscase,therear paneloutputsshouldbeconnectedtotheamplifier’sinputs. Thelineoutputconnectorsarestandardphono(RCA)sockets.Typicalconsumer(hi-fi)amplifiers andsmallpoweredmonitorswillhaveinputsonphono(RCA)socketsorasingle3.5mm3-polejack plug(intendedfordirectconnectiontoacomputer).Ineithercase,useasuitableconnectingcable withphonoplugs(RCAjacks)atoneend.
