In the Heights | Full Movie | Movies Anywhere (2024)
The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big. Lights up on Washington Heights. The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tightknit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life. “In the Heights” fuses Lin‐Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.
The real lesson from “In the Heights” boils down to this: who you are and what you do matters. You have an effect on everyone around you. When Nina feels unable to handle the pressure of college, the neighborhood is devastated for her and encourages her to go back and fight to belong.
The musical looks at issues present in our reality in the lives of the Latin and Caribbean population of Washington Heights, touching on racism, immigration, gentrification and more.
In The Heights is a celebration of family, culture, and Latino heritage that I found to be extremely well-done and will certainly pave the way for many more Latino stories to hit the big screen in the coming years.
Although In the Heights is semi-autobiographical, Miranda didn't actually grow up in Washington Heights; he spent most of his early life in the adjacent neighborhood of Inwood, experiencing Washington Heights as a frequent visitor but not really an inhabitant.
The most significant of these cut characters is Camila Rosario, Nina's mother, who is still alive in the musical: Hudes cited a desire to focus on two specific matriarchs in the community, Abuela Claudia and Daniela.
Vanessa dreams of escaping to a studio in the West Village: at the moment her only respite is a stop by Usnavi's bodega. Usnavi works up the courage to ask her out and she accepts. Nina is helping Benny on the switchboard when her parents return.
